WEEK 14: The Future of Comics | Miss Abbott and The Doctor

This week I was so excited to discover the comic Miss Abbott and The Doctor by Maripaz Villar. Compared to all the modern boyish action comics I have seen this semester, it was a nice change to find something situated in the Victorian era. The storyline and characters reminded me of Pride and Prejudice. The characters are both charming and awkward which makes this story very sweet. Similarly to Pride and Prejudice, it follows that hate to love pattern between the doctor and Cati. I love how radical and free spirited Cati's personality was through out the story which set her apart from other Victorian ladies.

The style is very unique for a comic and feels like sketches from a 2D hand drawn animation. I enjoyed the simplicity of this style and think it is very effective for getting the story across. The use of difference colors in the line work is interesting and made me question if this was associated with the moods of the characters. One thing I noticed is that this is the first time I have seen a comic broken down into episodes. This separates the stories but, like a Netflix show, didn't stop me from quickly clicking on the next episode to find out what happened. It's great to see that this is still an active continuing series, as I really want to read more!
